How to create a GS1 barcode.

Some companies need to create GS1 barcodes which are common standards in supply chain and medical device labeling. CODESOFT has a great wizard for creating those barcodes. You can find this just under the barcode generation wizard if you click this arrow and then click GS1 wizard. Now, click anywhere on your label to place the new GS1 barcode. GS1 barcodes are made up of different elements called application identifiers. To get started we will go ahead and click add, then you will see right away that there are a number of application identifiers you can use in GS1 barcodes. The ones you will need will be defined on internal specs for creating the barcode. For this example we use the zero one, GTIN, which is common in many GS1 specs. We will type in our GTIN data statically here and down below CODESOFT does the rest, by putting the GTIN into the GS1 spec. We can also use a when printed field to populate this data choosing variable in the drop down under data source. You then create another when printed field, prior to opening up this wizard. We will just be using fixed for this example and hit ok, then add it to our barcode.

We will go ahead and add another identifier to our barcode to make it longer, we will use an expiration date. Based on the list, what you are adding can be difficult to page through all the different identifiers so you can go ahead and search it in the top search bar up here if you know what number you need. For dates especially, there is a date variable on the right in CODESOFT where we can create this to populate for us, so it will automatically pull from the system clock all the time. Right now we will just use a static to populate our barcode. It looks good, and fits the spec we have here internally and the barcode will be generated on the label.

If you find that you need to update your GS1 barcode, if you don't need that expiration date anymore, we can right click and go into edit GS1 data structure, highlight it, then delete it. Now, our barcode is still fitting to the GS1 spec without needing to create a new one.
