What is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)?

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, also known as CFIA, enforces Canada's labeling laws regarding the declaration of allergens, gluten, and sulphites on packaged products for domestic and imported food items. CFIA works with companies in the case of a product recall to make sure the public is informed and the product was successfully removed from the shelves.

The Government of Canada states, “On average, the CFIA conducts 3,000 food safety investigations each year. The goal of food safety investigations is to determine whether a food safety hazard exists, assess the nature and extent of the issue, and take appropriate actions to eliminate or minimize potential risks to consumers”. 1. Product name: Labels should display the name or description of the food item so it's easier for consumers to identify.
2. Nutrition facts table: This table includes the nutrient content of the food, serving size, calories, fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The information order, size, spacing, and use of bold or capital letters help ensure legibility within the table.
3. Ingredient list: All products with more than one ingredient must be in descending order by weight. The common and scientific names of additives and food colorings must also be listed.
4. Allergens: The 12 allergens in Canada are peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, milk, eggs, soy, wheat and triticale, crustaceans and molluscs, mustard, fish, sulphites, and gluten. These must be declared in the ingredient list or in its own statement. The allergens list varies by region so be sure you are listing the correct allergens on your labels.
5. Net quantity: Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) requires the net weight or volume of the food item to be on the label. This rule allows consumers to compare sizes and prices of different products effectively.
6. Bilingual food labeling requirements: All mandatory information such as the product name, ingredient list, and nutrition facts, must be provided in English and French, Canada’s two official languages. 7. Country of Origin labeling: The country-of-origin requirement helps consumers make informed choices about the origin of the food they purchase. Foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, honey, and fish typically require country of origin labeling. Food imported into Canada from the United States must also contain the country of origin on the label.
8. Best before date and storage instructions: The Food and Drug Regulations (FDR) require products with a durable shelf life of 90 days or less to include a "best before" date and storage instructions. The best before date states the period in which the food is at its best quality but doesn’t necessarily mean it's unsafe to consumers afterward. The storage instructions help the consumer know how to store the food correctly.
