Video: How to Create a GS1 Digital Link

In today's video, we'll walk you through using the GS1 Digital Link wizard. While we will be demonstrating using CODESOFT, please note that these steps are applicable to LABELVIEW as well.

With a label open, click on the down arrow next to the barcode generation button. Then select GS1 Wizard. Click on the area of the label you would like to place the barcode. This will then open the GS1 barcode wizard.

We'll start by adding application identifiers. We can do this by clicking on add in the top right. This new window will allow for the selection of any of the application identifiers, these can be selected by clicking on the necessary application identifier. Using the data source selection, this will determine where the application identifier gets its data from. Fixed data would be for any data that remains constant and the variable option allows the application identifier to get its data from some variable on the label. Once these changes have been made, click OK and the application identifier will be added to the GS1 Wizard.

Here we can click on GS1 Digital Link and this will enable the GS1 Digital Link. First, we can change the base URL to be whatever the base URL of the website would be. Checking on the Compressed check box will compress everything after the base URL into alphanumeric characters, therefore decreasing the size of the barcode. We can also check the Optimize if possible checkbox. This is an additional step of compressing the data within the barcode. This can only be selected if Compressed is also checked. Finally, by checking the Use AI short names, this will add the short names of the application identifiers within the barcode rather than their respective application identifier numbers. Once all the application identifiers have been added, click OK on the GS1 Wizard and the GS1 barcode will be generated.
