Objective/Requirements:
A manufacturer had multiple production lines with separate workstations that control either one print and apply labeler for corner labels that wrap around the load, or two print and apply labelers that apply a label to the front of the load, and a different label to the side of the load. The customer wanted to centralize the databases and insert real-time information on the labels, while reducing key entry errors and maintaining the same process and speed on the lines.
Solution:
TEKLYNX Professional Services developed a centralized label printing solution using LABELVIEW™ as the design tool and print engine. When the user enters or scans an item number, the label form is retrieved from the central system. LABELVIEW retrieves variable data from a SQL database or multiple databases on a mainframe. The user selects the production line at which to print the label.
The workstation prompts the user for appropriate additional information which is written to a shared directory on the LABELVIEW server where it is merged with the variable data. If the production line has multiple labelers, the user is shown the label format for both labels. Each label is sent to the appropriate label applicator. The label print event itself is triggered by a photo eye on the line. The label format is downloaded only once per print run to speed the process and reduce interaction between the applicator and the LABELVIEW workstation.
