Objective/Requirements:
A leading chemical distributor’s label printing was not networked and required each remote site to download the latest label format files manually. The request was to develop a label printing system to allow an operator to enter a part number and other selection criteria, retrieve information from a database, and generate a label specific to that part number. Label templates for standard products would be maintained at a central location. Customer-specific labels could be maintained locally at the remote sites.
Solution:
TEKLYNX Professional Services developed a centralized label printing solution using CODESOFT® 7 label design software Enterprise Edition. CODESOFT works with a database that has shipping and product information. Flexible text blocks are built from sentences contained in the database. Within the block are sections for text on hazards, handling instructions, container instructions, fire, first aid, etc. Sentences are printed to the width of the block and then the text wraps to the next line at an appropriate word break. Formatting attributes (font, size, etc.) can vary for each section within a block.
Graphics are included on the label. The database for the part number specifies the symbol to be printed and the signal (such as danger, warning, etc.). Access to labels is restricted on a per-label basis. A password is required to open the label for printing only or to open the label for design. Users are not allowed to modify the database.
