Today’s Environment
Companies from around the world, with the exception of the United States and Canada, use EAN-8 and EAN-13 bar code symbologies to label retail products. This means that a product that originates outside North America has to be re-bar coded with a UPC bar code before it can be sold locally. This relabeling process adds cost and delays getting products to market.
Tomorrow’s Changes
The GS1 US and the Electronic Commerce Council of Canada (ECCC) have created the SUNRISE 2005 initiative, which will create a global bar coding standard. By January 1, 2005, all North American Retailers must be able to scan, process, and store all 2005 SUNRISE compliant bar codes into their system. This simply means that no matter what bar code symbology is used it will be treated the same by all scanners, databases and other software applications in the retail industry.
