In version A, the first digit is the number system character, followed by a five-digit manufacturer number, a five-digit product number, and a checksum character.
UPC-A accepts the following characters:
The UPC-A bar code is used to encode a 12-digit number. The first digit is the number system character, the next ten digits are the data characters, and the last digit is the checksum character.
UPC-A bar codes have the following characteristics:
- They contain numeric data only.
- They have two bars and two spaces per number.
- They have seven elements per number.
- A bar or space can be 1,2,3, or 4 elements in width.
- The dark element is a binary one.
- The light element is a binary zero.
- The checksum is a required character.
