The Aztec Mesa Code is a re-arrangement of the Aztec Code. It incorporates a linear "host" symbol where the Aztec Mesa portion lies on top and also possibly below the host symbol. The Mesa is commonly known as a "2D supplemental field" and the entire symbol makes up a "composite" barcode symbol.
Special considerations for the Aztec Mesa and its host include:
- Interleaved 2 of 5 - These symbols are often printed with a "barrier" pattern along the top and bottom to prevent short reads.
- "Full Height" UPC and EAN symbols - These symbols may require a barrier pattern which looks like "stilts." This will prevent problems when the symbol is read by a laser scanner in a point of sale environment.
- All linear host symbols will follow their unique specifications for correct encoding. An additional feature of the Mesa supplement allows for a "symmetry" option, which will divide the Mesa proportionally to display on the top and bottom of the linear host symbol.
The required input string for the Aztec Mesa will begin with data for the linear portion (the linear host) with a "|" (pipe character) separating the data for the Mesa.
Example:
123456789|This is a test
The data at the beginning of the string will be used to encode into the chosen linear host and the "This is a test" data after the | symbol will be encoded as the Mesa portion.
