Code 39, also referred to as "3 of 9 Code","Code 39 mod 43", and "Extended Code 39", was the first alphanumeric linear symbology developed. This is one of the most commonly used barcode symbologies in non-retail applications. The main reason for this is that it can encode uppercase letters, numbers, and some punctuation. Every Code 39 character consists of five bars and four spaces, making a total of 9 elements. Code 39 can be either discrete or variable length. The asterisk (*) is used as a start and stop character.
Code 39 accepts the following characters:
- Capital letters A-Z
- Numbers 0-9
- Space character
- Symbols - . $ / + %
